چکیده

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a well-known problem for many mountaineers [1] [2] [3]. The phenomena can appear at elevations as low as 2500m, with symptoms such as headaches, sleep problems, and abnormal fatigue. The technique described here permits recovery of sufficient strength and wellbeing to spend a safe and comfortable night at the same altitude, or to allow a safe descent to a lower altitude.

Acute pulmonary oedema on the Ruwenzori mountain range.

A 40 year old man had an episode of severe pulmonary oedema at 4000-5000 m during the ascent of the Margherita peak (5109 m) of Mount Stanley on the Ruwenzori. He had taken acetazolamide and high dose dexamethasone to treat symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Six years before he had been studied by right heart catheterisation as a healthy volunteer during hypoxic breathing at sea level. His pu...

Ibuprofen prevents altitude illness: a randomized controlled trial for prevention of altitude illness with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories.

STUDY OBJECTIVE Acute mountain sickness occurs in more than 25% of the tens of millions of people who travel to high altitude each year. Previous studies on chemoprophylaxis with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are limited in their ability to determine efficacy. We compare ibuprofen versus placebo in the prevention of acute mountain sickness incidence and severity on ascent from low to hig...

Respiratory rate within the first hour of ascent predicts subsequent acute mountain sickness severity.

BACKGROUND Altitude illness results from hypobaric hypoxia at altitudes higher than 2500 meters above sea level. To determine whether vital signs can be used as predictors for severe acute mountain sickness, we carried out a prospective observational study. METHODS A cohort of 90 individuals (male/female ratio: 2; age: 13 - 65 years) in a mountain hotel's clinic at 3450 meters in Iran were st...

JRRD At A Glance for Volume 45, Number 4, 2008

Symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS) may be due to abnormal regulation of the volume of brain and spinal fluid. No relevant research exists on individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI). We studied symptoms of 64 subjects with TBI, SCI, multiple sclerosis, or no impairments at the 2007 National Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass, Colorado. We found a h...
